These are the questions I found myself asking a few years ago. 

As a chef, teacher, and lifelong lover of great food, I thought I had a grasp on how to cook for others in any environment…

…Until I became a father.

➞  I’d studied in a prestigious culinary program.

➞  I’d worked in fast-paced fine dining restaurants on 3 continents.

➞  I’d helped build a farm-to-table cooking school, catering company, and restaurant where we grew our own produce, eggs, sheep, and honey.

➞  I’d even opened a restaurant in China!

But nothing could have prepared me for the challenges of balancing family life, my career, and my deep desire to make mealtime mean something to my family.

➞  I dreamed of my wife, my son, and I preparing amazing meals together in perfect harmony—but cooking beautiful food day in and day out while navigating life as a parent often left me feeling exhausted.

➞  I still loved cooking—but suddenly, I felt overwhelmed by the constant worry: Was I making the right foods my son needed to thrive? Was I providing him with the “right” nutrition & mealtime habits?

➞  I wanted to introduce our son to a world of interesting, nourishing foods—but often, he would push the plate aside and ask for something else. (What an exercise in patience!)

A couple of years into our parenting journey, I looked at my stress levels and thought… what happened here??

I’d had such high hopes for creating a beautiful, memorable, nourishing experience around food for our family… Why wasn’t I enjoying it? Where was the flow?

Fortunately, we saw the cycle we were creating early on and made a conscious choice to start shifting our mindset around mealtime. 

I realized that while cooking was the easy part for me (I felt far more bogged down by the anxiety of feeding my child the “wrong” foods!), simply getting a meal on the table was a challenge for many families.

“No wonder so many families turn to pizza, packaged foods, and processed meals,” I realized. “I’m a trained chef—and figuring out how to nourish my kid is still massively stressful.”

From there, I decided to zoom out and reexamine how I’d been taught to think of nutrition, nourishment, and cooking—both from the perspective of a chef and of a new parent. I wondered…

➞  How can we make nourishing our families simpler, so we can love our meals even on the days when we feel a little overwhelmed?

➞  How can we create a flowing framework that brings ease and fun back into our kitchen?
 

➞  How can we get back to the basics and recommit to bringing curiosity, community, and creativity to our food?
